He's really the first young American prodigy since Galen Rupp to actually reach world-beating level. And we've had quite a few prodigies over the years.
Sydney was a young American prodigy who was superstar level as a freshman in college and has not disappointed since.
Officially he is Swedish, but the greatest prodigy produced by America in decades is Armand Duplantis.
GOAT and woke are the most overused words these days.
Especially since there can only be one in the world at a given event (or perhaps close combination of events). Obviously that is laughable as I'm unaware of American being the current GOAT in any running event. Are we seriously saying the American GOAT? That we have to qualify this as one an American GOAT is beyond absurd.
That something is everything about talent, consistency, self awareness, enjoying what he is doing, surrounding himself with great people, having a world class coach, having world class training partners, having the resources to do multiple altitude camps, being a positive person, having the staying power and mental toughness to push himself through pain, grinding it out daily, sacrificing a lot.
The list goes on and will never be understood or realized by the few under achiever negative posters on this board.
Aww, someone is a little tetchy. The great people = dopers. The great coach = a liar. The resources = ...lol need I go on? Look, it's in Grant's power to fix this situation, he simply needs to stop associating with dopers and doping apologists. I'd love it if he ran these sorts of times clean, I really would.
Shoes probably add full minute, and 20 seconds for wave(cheater)light, 30 seconds for a rubber track, 10 seconds for competition which almost no recent fast 10k runs have had, 30 seconds for the rubber track, 2 minutes for running at Boston a month ago and while we’re at it add another hour for the burrito sauce. Converts to 1:31:03 if you just thought about it for like half a second I really can’t see why people are losing it over this performance.
A guy who can’t even beat Morgan McDonald is suddenly the 7th fastest all time in the 10k. Sureeeee
Yeah, he gets out-kicked in a race how many years ago, so he's not allowed to improve and be better, eh?
Suddenly? You obviously know little to nothing about training.
I used to think everyone who still said brought up Hunter's Brooks 2 mile win over Fisher was just joking, but maybe not a duck unironically thinks that just because you outkicked someone years ago means you can't improve faster than them.
no video to be found. JFC how do people expect this sport to grow if they cant even post an American record right after it happens. any other sport you'd see video all over social media or on ESPN. all we have are a few photos. such a joke.

Everything I listed about Grant is what you will never have.
Every time an athlete posts a great performance it raises questions about doping. Whether they are doped or not it tells us where the sport is. No performance now can be trusted and taken at face value. But that doesn't stop the indignant protestations of the naive and the doping deniers.
I used to be firmly in the "doping is an isolated occurrence" camp, but Icarus and More Plates More Dates on YouTube pushed me in the other direction. That being said, innocent until proven guilty in my opinion, even if there will always be question marks attached because of the prevalence.
Also, I take sociological/behavioral studies with many grains of salt, but this was kind of eye-opening as an insight into the motivations of the elite:
"The study (n=198) found that 98% of these elite athletes would use PEDs if they knew they would not get caught and use would result in victory in their sport. When asked the same question with the caveat that the athlete would die within 5 years, 61% still reported they would use the PED."

I'm sorry, I failed to specify "distance runner" prodigies.
There have obviously been many men/women prodigies 800m and below who have been hugely successful: Ajee Wilson, Brazier, McLaughlin, Noah Lyles, and many others.
On Letsrun there is a special place in our hearts for distance though. Meaning 1500m+
The only other high school distance prodigy I can think of since Rupp might be Centro. Though he wasn't nearly as dominant as Verzbicas, Cheserek, Fisher, Hunter, Nico Young, Kessler, etc.
