Hate to say it but Elle Purrier St Pierre is displaying diva-like tendencies. In her post race 3k victory interview she actually slipped up and said that she was thankful for Alicia Monsons pacing. She quickly corrected herself and said, "leading " but really? It's all about her.
That sounds like an innocent slip-up and not being a "diva". That's not a mean comment by any means.
The post-race interaction with Maclean was definitely awkward. That's on both of them - Purrier was frustrated and likely didn't realize how she was coming across and Maclean is just a bit awkward. It's the first time she beat Purrier and now that it's happened once they'll learn to live with it the next time.
Crazy that Elle was left off the team but sure she will be back tomorrow in the 3,000m
I think we are always left wondering (we dont know) if runner x is really peaking for indoor season and/or injury status. I know worlds is the carrot, but there are many that didnt even show up, so i dont know that we can assume everyone is peaking...and times were slow. Am I the only one who noticed purrier was wearing a brace? With JS out Im on the Purrier wagon. But also happy for MaClean. I just dont know that this result will hold up for primetime this spring/summer.

Pro track is an INDIVIDUAL sport, not a team sport. It's supposed to be all about her. And that goes not just for Purrier but for each of the other athletes as well.
They are on a team, Elle herself referred to Heather as a teammate and was thrilled they both qualified for Olympics. Heather and everyone on NB has supported Elle in her victories and it was noted that she did not congratulate or acknowledge Heather's win. I understand she was disappointed but sometimes you have to rise above. Hopefully she will learn from this. Winning is easy to be the hood sport.
The more curious thing for me was MacLean's reaction. She won her first national title and didn't look like she was too excited. Obviously she was but she didn't show it.
Does anyone else think this is because she was shocked to actually beat Purrier who she trains with everyday? I assume Elle hands it to her in practice most days as well.
In high school, I used to get crushed by my teammate. He beat me in college as well. I'm sure the first time I beat him I was shocked but also wouldn't want to put it in his face with a big celebration.
Interesting, I can't help but recall when Quigley beat Shelby at USA indoors for the mile title. Colleen did nothing to conceal just how excited she was, posting all over social media and in the press. I think Colleen deserved that moment as did Heather but I wonder how much of what Colleen did that daw sowed friction in the team before she left the group.
Unlike Quigs (which props to her for winning her title), the picture Heather posted post race gave the impression that she had not made the team! I saw and scrolled past b/c I hadn't had a chance to watch the race yet but after seeing the pic I just thought she was posting about how she didn't make it. Weird.
I was not impressed with Elle this weekend. I hate to say it. But I was...not impressed.
I was not impressed with her instagram post either. "Hey Heather! We made our second team together!" not..."Congrats to my teammate and best friend Heather on winning her first national title???" You know, when Courtney beat Emma, she had the grace to congratulate her. When Courtney got the AR Emma congratulated her again. Heather didn't just make a team with you, Ellie. She won a national title, fair and square.
On the other hand, I am loving Heather Maclean. What a great story of a great kid. Total underdog, overlooked her entire career. In high school, her teammate Cat Rocha made Footlocker Nationals, got a ton of press, and was the superstar in Massachusetts. No one even knew Heather's name. Rocha's father was Heather's coach.
Heather worked her way up, had some difficult trials in life (even at the olympic trials, her family was not able to make it to watch her) and no one coddled her or considered her special. I love that she came storming in to claim a spot as one of America's best.

What a strange post about two people who are obviously friends. Your quote from Purrier's post is missing her all caps "LFG!!!!" and a bunch if heart emojis when talking about Heather, but you couldn't mention that as it would undermine your weird point.
Reminds me of when people would talk crap about Moh Ahmed vs Grant Fisher when the two are obviously super tight.
Fans projecting their feelings onto their heroes is always strange.

I completely agree. Elle got all the press and attention and Heather was the unheralded one. And you are correct about Emma and others who congratulate their competitors and do the hard thing. I was surprised and disappointed the way Elle conducted herself. It goes to character.

It's definitely an insight into the dynamics within that team. Is Purrier's ego that fragile or is her personality so strong that her teammate is afraid to beat her to the finish line for a national championship?
A subplot I’ve been following of these 1500/mile races is Purrier and Maclean vs Cory McGee. Cory credited her success to switching to Joe Bosshard as a coach, which is interesting given how well her former teammates at Coogan’s group are doing. She may have needed a change in stimulus -though at the time it sounded like some shade was being thrown.

I think it's more a combination of Purrier-St. Pierre's ego + Heather's natural reticence and tendency to not want to be, or expect to be in the spotlight. I thought it was nice the way she embraced Norris after the interview. She seems genuinely surprised at her success.

Yes yes. I agree about the shade. I'm happy that Cory fulfilled her Olympic dream but it appears she is back to an also ran.
