California got more COVID at the very beginning with its travel to and from China, and the two were relatively similar for quite a while in death rates, though Florida was still 20% higher. Now Florida is 19th in death rate at 3,095/million, whereas California is just 38th at 2,079. Florida's death rate is 50% higher than California's, and more of that is mask mandates than vaccination, because their rates are relatively close. Florida is at 65.9% and California at 69.6%. That's a small part of the reason. A bigger part is the masks.
