Family this is (person's name) they can figure out what's up for themselves. Is your family stupid or what?

I have two sons. One married his wife as soon as they graduated college. The other lived with his partner for 11 years before they married. They both have wonderful committed relationships with the women they love. What matters is how they feel about each other and how they support each other, not how they introduce themselves.

The same way they would introduce a gf that does not live with them. People's living arrangements are not anyone else's business.

Why does this matter to you?

But having lived with a woman...

1) I introduced her as "This is my girlfriend (name)." I make no mention of our living arrangements upon introduction.

2) Never felt strange about it and my mother did not approve of our living arrangement.

3) I am an atheist so church as not an issue. Although I would joke about us "living in sin".

It sounds like you made a good decision for you so that you are not uncomfortable. Now lead a life and stop worrying about what others are doing that in no way affect you.

Interesting question. I see the takes from young people that haven't "shaked" up with their girlfriend for long. But how would you introduce after 20 or 30 years? My daughter's in-laws are not married but they've been "shaked up" for 40 or so years. I cannot remember how her father-in-law (or mother-in-law) introduced the other to me but I bet it wasn't as their girlfriend or boyfriend or partner or good friend. Probably wife or husband.

I know people who have lived together for decades and never married. They usually just introduce each other as "This is Peggy." Often in the context you know they are a couple. Not sure how pertinent their living arrangements or marital status is. I did hear someone ask Peggy once "Are you married?" She answered "No but we share a home together". The conversation then just moved on.

Or "Hey where's my ball-n-chain at?"

Now, in polite company: "Yes, pleased to meet you. Allow me to introduce my better half. *turns around, drops trou* Oh, and this is my ole lady, otherwise known the ball-n-chain." Really makes an impression.
