The analysis of these races by Stafford etc. is pretty much spot on. Most 4:00 1500m runners will be able to close a 4:05-4:10 race with a sub 30 last 200m. Many solid sub 4 runners will be able to close a sub 4 race with a ca. 60 sec. lap, take e.g. the DL finale Zurich 2019 (Hassan, Klosterhalfen, Stafford). There is very little to be told by a 4:15 race with a fast last lap because there are 4:05 runners with a good kick who can do this.
Or to put a different twist on the question: A 3:56 (AR) runner should be able to run ca. 8:30 14:50, even if more of an 800/1500 type . Do people think Mu could run 8:30 3000m with a bit of mileage?
