Trying for sub 4 soon?
Did you retire from running devastated?
Should I do workouts in my refueled heavily cushioned trainers, or buy a lighter pair of trainers that might increase my chance of injury but will be faster? Workouts are 200s through 4 milers ranging from 800 pace to half marathon pace. Training for mile. How fast of a pace might it make sense or not?
Nope, was 20 years ago. Sorry for late reply needed to wait 72 hours before posting
Not at all. Retired as you would call it when I wanted to … didn’t stress about it one minute
How old are you? What’s your body type. What paces are you running? Would need to know a bit more info to make an educated statement with regards to your question
16 male, workouts are at 4:20- 5:00 pace. I am 130 pounds and 5’ 8. Train normally in brooks glycerin, so a “max” cushioned trainer. Running 50 miles per week, and attempting to do a high percentage of quality miles this season, for a peak in may.
I personally don’t think you need to be using high cushioned trainers for all your workouts and maybe none of your workouts….I would actually only use those for your easy runs and long runs to give your legs a rest….And even those with your body frame you could probably get away with using normal training shoes ( ie supanova or pegasus). I used to like putting on spikes for fast workouts, ie 60 second laps….and I also find it necessary sometimes as your more prone to injury running in flats around a curve at high speeds as your feet slide to the outside…. If you don’t wear spikes now, you could slowly incorporate them into your workouts by putting them on, maybe on the final rep, then the next workout on the last two…. As for tempos and slower stuff, I’d stick to your normal trainers. Also mile spikes get you on your toes a lot more then let’s say 10k spikes, so for 5k speeds maybe some racing flats as your not going to slip too much on the turns at that speed… if you don’t have a problem with your feet, ie plantar fasciitis, I’d wear spikes for fast stuff and your normal shoes for tempos and longer intervals…
Now taking questions for the next two hours… live …
Currently in 5:20 mile shape (other PRs including 5k 18:10-ish) and 15-20 lbs over my racing weight (BMI 24.5). If I lose those lbs, any chance I can run a sub-5 or sub-450 mile? Also, what are some bread-and-butter workouts I should do to get there?
how long did it take you to get down to 4:02? what stopped you from getting to 3:59.99?
lifetime PB is 4:25 at the moment. was injured for a few years but feel like i'm doing everything right and am back in top shape... would love to get close
Lose 10 pounds, without losing muscle and you’ll run 14 seconds faster ( per studies).
Bread and butter workout if your in high school is 8x400 with one minute rest. Try and hit 74 on all 8 with one minute rest.
Without knowing your running experience, and mileage I can’t honestly give more info but I will if you supply
Multiple questions and you’ll get multiple answers
I got to 4:02 in 3 years of running full time by the time I was 20. Played football, basketball and baseball before giving running a shot.
I obviously wanted to break 4 but walked away at the age of 21 … didn’t really matter to me the 4 mark barrier as I had other things I wanted to do.
If you love the sport and have goals and dedication, you can get to where you want as long as genetics and work ethic are there… I know a lot of people will disagree but you need to have both!
Hello, I run a 2:06 in the 800m, but my mile time is 5 minutes and my 5k is 18:30, I have other sports so I can only run 3 times a week. Any advice on how to get my 5k and mile lower
How old are you? How many miles a week do you currently run? Your 800 time says to me you can run 4:35 minimum or even 4:28 but as you don’t run much it will be hard to get there. There isn’t a magic pill but if there was one I’d tell you to try and run 3 miles on you “ days off”, when playing other sports. Not gonna kill you and will probably make you a better athlete overall….
I’m 14, and I would estimate around 15 miles a week. How many miles would you recommend during different periods of the year, and needed to get to a 4:40 level
Jesus, 15 miles a week…14 years old… I wouldn’t recommend you do much. Enjoy sports, when you decide what sport makes you happiest… apply yourself. But you will get there if you want. Fact!
I’m just asking how many miles will I need to do to reach a good endurance level with times like you mentioned?
When I say Jesus, all I mean is that you have talent. 15 miles a week even at 14 is nothing. Increase a mile a week and the results will come …. I ran 4:18 mile off 35 miles a week. But you sound like you can get there…. If you all ply yourself now you may get there faster, if you apply yourself in a couple of years, you will get there as well .
