Hmm, we have people talking average distance runner vs average team, and I view them as separate concepts.
I will happily call a 56/2:08/4:42 guy an "average distance runner". He's not accomplishing anything on his own. But if a HS has 4 of those guys, that's a team that's going to states in XC unless it's the "big school" divisions of states like California and New York. So not really average.
We had an 8:02 4x800 that could do 3:35 or so in the 4x400 with the same team members. But we won several invitationals with teams traveling from out of state, XC section champions 3 years in a row... And very specifically, if the 200m and Jumping Events weren't a thing, we probably would have never lost a track meet either.
