You sit around in your house calling people racial slurs? Are you just, like, screaming these things to yourself or are you saying them to other people?
And you think the only problem with that would be if it were made public?
No, I don't. But I definitely have made off-color jokes, even jokes involving racial stereotypes.
So what should the punishment be for being caught on video in the same room as other people who used a racial slur? What should the punishment be for making a bad joke about going to Africa and getting AIDS? I can disagree with the language, but should these people never be allowed to ever work again? I? your view that's an appropriate punishment?
Well the problem in this case is obviously that judges are not supposed to display bias, cannot lobby, cannot fundraise for political parties, etc. The reasons why are obvious: a judge who displays open racial bias or any political or personal bias cannot be trusted to objectively and fairly treat all defendants. Judges have tremendous power - up to the power determining life and death. The stakes of sending people to prison are so high that we must do all we can to ensure an unbiased system as far as it is possible., Do you disagree with that fundamental principle of the justice system? A judge screaming racial slurs and using dehumanizing language clearly is not fit to sit in judgement over black people and would be challenged by every lawyer defending a black person in their courtroom. It would be the same if, say, she was caught saying she thinks all men are violent rapists or something. It’s not appropriate.
In your case I would be worried if you joke about Africans having AIDS and you were like a healthcare worker or something. But my point wasn’t that people should lose their jobs, my point was a tree falling in a forest one: just because no one hears you on tape saying these things doesn’t mean that makes it fine. Your post implied the problem in the modern world isn’t people who say racist things about people, it’s merely that now they can get caught. I was pointing out to you that it’s sh—-y behaviour whether or not anyone catches you.
If you were a kid who said stupid things then matured and learned better then sure, I don’t think that should ruin your life. Kids are dumb and people change and grow. If you’re a grown adult and you’re still sitting around making stupid racist jokes then - serious question - why?
