It looks like Austin is very supportive of the runners trying to get a OT or BQ time.
I may run Austin just for this reason.

All great stuff, thanks. These are both big races with large fields, so obviously they both have something to offer.
I think Austin still wins out. My PR is set at Boston, so the "beware of the downhill" warning doesn't scare me, but duly noted. Plus CIM was supposed to be my fall marathon until I got injured so I've been training downhill running. The OTQ hopefuls should make it interesting, although I can kiss any hopes of an AG award goodbye.
Concrete, however, does scare me. Some people are sensitive to this, others are not. I am. Whenever I run the Embarcadero in SF - or even worse, the GG Bridge - it takes a lot out of my legs. I do it often because I figured it will make me stronger, but I hate concrete and I'm not fast on it. So that was a valuable piece of feedback.
Houston is the day before MLK day, Austin is the day before President's Day. Both are PTO days for me, so whichever race I choose I'll stick around until Monday night or Tuesday morning. Arriving Friday that means I'll be there for 1.5 days before and 1.5 days after the race, plus I know I'll probably spend a grand including everything. Which city is more fun to visit is a factor, if not the deciding one.
Bottom line, Austin. Napa is backup. Appreciate the input!
I agree that Austin is a pretty cool town. It is my favorite Texas city.
Can't lose either way for a fast marathon. I've heard they rerouted the end of the marathon as well to provide for better audiences. Perhaps this year you won't hear the crickets chirping as you churn through those final miles.
Hope they improved on the mile markers as well.
Houston, period. Crazy to even think Austin can be compared to Houston. No way. Run both then comment; heck, just check out marathonguide.com.
yo...did you check out 6th street, man? And the hottub...there were these chicks in there...topless!
6th Street is for college kids and deadbeats.
go to chuy's in either town and get a burrito as big as your face and wash it down with a few margaritas.
What?? You can get huge portions in Texas? Now, who would have thought that?
