so youre saying that the symbolism and emotions connected to a flag are derived from the actions/status of the country's current government? either youre proud of your country's culture and heritage or youre not and always willing to show that pride. if a flag is something that you might want to hide, b/c of the actions of the government (eg Japan, Germany WWII), then it's really not a good represnetation of the pride you have in your culture and heritage. if a flag truly represnts your heritage/culture, then you will NEVER be ashamed to hide it. but flags are mere symbols of government--some good some corrupt.
ive seen mexcians who've won races and put on sombreros and traditional mexcian coats or something like that. now **THAT** is all about culture, not nationalism. granted, they were also waving the mexican flag, but it just shows that not eveything has to be about flag waving. i can see the jingoism being OK at major international competitions, but c'mon, this was the NYC marathon at the US championships.
like it or not, meb needs a good PR agent if he wants to go down in the record books as a "real" american in the hearts of runners.
i know, i know. this topic has been hashed and rehased. i'll stop.
