Nandrolone, the favorite doping agent of Kenyans. Including in France. There is a case with Nicholas Cheruiyot Chumba. A positive finding dating back to April 2019, but which only recently came to light. Before his test, the 28-year-old Kenyan had competed in several big events across France, and he had just been laid off at an athletics club in Roanne. His story is reminiscent of Eliud Ngetich, also positive for nandrolone, but in the United States.
“Nandrolone is an unknown product to us ”. The statement was from Shelby Houlihan and words from Jerry Schumacher, her coach.
Other experts posited that “nandrolone is of no use to endurance athletes.
This idea, that nandrolone was not useful for endurance athletes was used in defense of Shelby Houlihan, supposedly wrongly accused of a positive nandrolone control, which she claims she unwittingly absorbed through a pork burrito.
But a few weeks later, the case of Eliud Ngetich would seriously derail these dubious arguments. This young Kenyan, living in the United States since the age of 16, was also found positive for nandrolone.
Because the facts show it: nandrolone is a doping agent much appreciated by endurance specialists, long middle distance and marathon runners around the world. And Kenyans are very fond of it. Thus between 2004 and 2018, 36% of positive cases in Kenya came from nandrolone, or about 130 runners.
French anti-doping news reminds us of this with the publication on the AFLD website of the sanction imposed on Nicholas Cheruiyot Chumba, who tested positive for nandrolone in April 2019.
Unfortunately, it is more than two years after the events that this story emerges. And it appears then that this young athlete of 28 years had disappeared from competitions since that date. With a last competition, in the 10 km of Roanne, on April 7, 2019.
Three days later, he was to be checked (for ingestion of doping products ) while in police custody. The exact circumstances are not yet known. But the samples taken from time to time spoke volumes about the use of this anabolic steroid, so effective at handling workloads.
Nicholas Cheruiyot Chumba had just taken part in a few French classics (road races) for a few months. With a first appearance at the Metz Marathon in October 2018, which he won in 2:24 ’. Then a comeback in February 2019, he had another series of victories, in the 10 km of Morcourt, Bourg en Bresse half-marathon, and of Orvault, and a 4th place in Nuaillé.
It was just after this half-marathon that his license at the CA Roanne club was going to be registered, and he competed under their colors for the 10 km organized by his club, which he only finished in 8th position, but with a new record of 29'36 ''.
A performance which, to this day, remains his last. Nicholas Cheruiyot Chumba obviously did not wait for official notification of his positive test to quit his career and return to Kenya. Fortunately, it was not until January 2020 that the AFLD notified him of his provisional suspension. And the AFLD Sanctions Commission was only going to pronounce its 4-year suspension in March 2021.
Admittedly, we are a long way from the 7 years it took for USADA to unveil the case of Eliud Ngetich, who continued to compete in American races, with 61 competitions contested after his positive test ...
