This thread is silly because it's the equivalent of comparing a great pentathlete/heptathlete to a person who holds not just one but multiple world records.
In athletics we will always value specialization over range. If you value well rounded athletes then go watch a sport where many skills are involved instead of athletics where the whole point is to minimize skill in order to see how far people can push themselves in a very specific discipline.
If you hold multiple world records, then you are the best of all time in multiple events.
If you are good at several things but the best at none, that is significantly less impressive.
If you hold even one wr, even that is more impressive than being a jack of many trades but master of none.
No, what counts is winning head to head championship races. Running super fast times in random races, often with a special set up is nothing compared to winning an Olympic gold. When it mattered most, Hassan destroyed Gidey this summer. It wasn’t close, and that was after all the rest Hassan did the week prior. Maybe things will change, but if a rested Hassan and Gidey line up now at any distance, Hassan is winning.
