So I started using Strava a few months ago, and I've noticed a very consistent trend across the runners I follow. Many of the 'slower' runners I know, as in men in their prime struggling to break 16 for 5K, do ALL of their easy runs very easy, as in 7+ minutes per mile on every easy run. I even know a guy who runs 100 mile weeks regularly, but I did an easy run with him once and he told me he will not go faster than 7:30's. This guy barely scraped under 9 for 3K in the Summer
I long held the belief that this was the right way to train, yet I don't really know any faster guys who do this. Yes, there is a time and a place when faster guys run very slow, for example an AM run if you're doing speedwork in the PM I've seen sub-14 guys cranking out 8 minute miles, but from what I see most faster guys run many of their easy miles close to 6 minute pace, some will start slow and speed up while others will crank out that pace for the entire distance.
I've always been the type to START easy on every easy day, but many runs will end at sub-6 pace, and I feel that this works well for me personally and I know this is what people like Kipchoge do too.
Have others got experience with people who run REALLY easy all the time?
