I coached 20+ years and I will not allow any athletes and attendance is mandatory 100% of the time unless there is a medial issue identified by a physician. One of the more successful high school coaches in the country who has an established long term program history said in one of his workshops, "If the coach is at practice, then so are the athletes as every practice should have a purpose. If the athletes are not required to be there then it's a club and not a varsity sport." There comes a time when student athletes have to make decisions. Varsity cross country and track or club sports. Experience has taught me if they are not there 100% of the time they will not value it as much as others. Suppose they had to be there M-W-F and go to soccer on T-Th. Then why does their parents schedule the dentist appointments on non-soccer days? Why do these last second weekend soccer tournaments come up and they have to miss track meets or invites? They could just as easily skip the soccer tournament. This list goes on and on. Mandatory attendance creates value. In the short term...yes we have had some GOOD freshman/sophmore athletes. But by the time they are juniors/seniors the other athletes pass them up as they are better developed and then you have to hear from the overly involved father, "What's wrong with my son/daughter?" and who wants to deal with that, because the truth is rarely good enough. This is especially true on the female side in terms of them getting passed by their teammates. I could careless if we possibly miss parading around a potential state champ frosh/soph girl. It does not make those coaches any better than they were before that athlete came around. We are there to develop who is as committed as we are. Besides, the race slots these club athletes take up could be used by athletes who are around all of the time and they could gain valuable experience for future races. If this has anything to do with, "Well I want to get in shape for ___________ (insert another sport)." ....there are plenty of private trainers that could provide more purposeful training for what they are looking for and that's where they should go.
