This is right, curves are the devil for GPS, especially if your sample rate is set to 3s or "smart." Only 1s sample can be relied on, and for really tight turns even that is not sufficient. Never understood wanting to cheat yourself either. On common loops that I used to run, up to ~1 mile, I actually bought a wheel measure and went around three times on my running line to get it to within a couple of centimeters of accuracy. Then I would count laps and multiply by that distance to get the actual distance. The GPS track would sometimes be less than 1% off and sometimes it could be 6% off.
