Can I cross train with jump rope? When I worked out at a boxing gym in college I became used to using a jump rope. It sounds like a low cost and easy way to cross train. Could anyone suggest how to cross train with jump rope? I have never cross trained and I wonder what impact it would have on recovery and run days
It’s probably not a useful way to *cross train* because plyometric exercises are too close to running and also involve impact stress. Running after all is repeatedly jumping on one foot. Cross training for runners is best done with non-impact sports like cycling or swimming. Sports like soccer or basketball that involve running can help train in ways peripherally useful to running but don’t relieve impact stress and are not very useful for recovery periods or during periods when you can’t run because of an injury.
If recovery or injury is not your primary concern, jumping rope or other plyo is great for developing more explosive strength in muscles used for running.
