I'm 41 and have run about 20 marathons or so. I run about 70mpw year round and typically will do a marathon buildup where I don't run that many more miles (I might get up to 80) but I do more workouts (5k repeats sub-MP; 8-10 miles at goal MP, etc.). For a variety of reasons this summer I was busy and simply did a lot of easy running. Realizing I might be in trouble for Boston the last 3 weekends in a row I have run 20 miles, one of them with ~6 miles faster than MP toward the end. I am typically a 3 week taper guy and have never tried doing just a 2 week taper. PR is 2:55 (set two years ago at age 39).
My question: given my age, running history, etc. does it make sense for me to try to get in another 20-22 miler this weekend? If so, should I push it with the pace or just do a longer "on the feet" kind of workout? Or should I just start tapering, go in with what I have, and hope for the best? One thought would be to run the long run on Saturday, thus giving myself two "extra" recovery days (I normally run long runs on Sunday).
