1. 25 seconds for swapping out shoes? You think Sage was running in boots? Funny take. I hope it was sarcastic. Why would you have expected the other guys on York’s team to run faster? They weren’t winning. Sage was. They were what they were. Illinois had plenty of competition in that range. 9:05-9:20 guys.
2. We are talking about 3 miles. Not the 4x800. It doesn’t appear that any of NBP’s runners are speedy. I’m sure York would beat them in the 4x400 as well. But again, equally not relevant to cross country.
3. Sage did get second at FL. I still have the race recorded. I said what I said with that context. In fact, I watched a lot of Sage races and was “close” to making FL within a few years of 99. The difference is this: Colin Sahlman ran 4:04 mile / 8:43 3200m last year (both materially faster than everyone from that FL race coming in). You know what place he finished this weekend? 4th on the team. Lex Young ran 8:43 at Arcadia. You know why he place he finished? 3rd on the team. More context, Nico Young ran 7:56 indoor (HS record) and didn’t get many chances to shatter records because of COVID. One of the guys ran faster than him and the other 3 were within 9 seconds of his time. You’re talking about 4 dudes in 8:40 ish 2 mile shape right now. It’s not a knock on Sage at all.
Saying Sage would’ve finished 5th is an honest assessment of where they are right now. Versus where he was before outdoor of his senior year.
It may have been the greatest FL of all time by name. But it was a different era. At the time of the FL meet, I’m not sure if any one in the race was a sub 9 guy officially. Ritz won Nationals with 9:01. Webb was a 4:06 guy but endurance wasn’t all that great yet.
