Ummm...ever heard of Jim Thorpe? He participated in track and field but also in other sports.

He won Olympic gold medals in both the pentathlon and decathlon.

He also played professional football, professional basketball and professional baseball.

The Associated Press ranked him as the greatest athlete of the first 50 years of the 20th century.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame inducted him as part of its inaugural class of 1963.

As much as I love running, I do agree with the post. A great decathlete would be considered more of a GOAT.

It’s worth pointing out that the word, “athlete” refers to someone who competes in TF in most of the world.

Regardless, the answer is Alex Honnold. There’s really no contest. The NFL is more akin to miniature golf than what Honnold does.

Caitlin Jenner of course. She was a bad dude in his/her time. Possibly the greatest female olympian/ athlete ever.

Guitar playing isn't a skill either. All you do is just move your fingers up and down the fretboard.

Most people would consider Usain Bolt to be one of the greatest athletes of all time, but maybe you're not including sprinters as 'runners'.

Including Lewis Hamilton and Tiger Woods makes your argument a bit of a joke.

You seriously think either are greater 'athletes' than Usain Bolt?

To be in the conversation for greatest athlete of all time one must have great speed and great leaping ability/explosiveness. Anyone else is excluded from the conversation.

Anyone who plays a sport where a fat person can excel .... think golf (john Daly), baseball (Ruth, Jon Kruk, Fernando Valenzuela), tennis (Serena) is also excluded from the conversation.

Runners by and large are athletes that are not athletic enough to be in higher profile sports.

But anyways, I don’t think anyone would ever claim that a pure distance runner is the GOAT athlete.
