My son is being recruited by a few different D1 schools currently. Two of them have made scholarship offers and my boy is still undecided. Both coaches told us that these offers are guaranteed for 4 years and they couldn't pull the scholly for any reason other than failing out of school or legal trouble. They said injury or performance would not affect it per the NCAA. Is this true? I know I've seen people talk of losing their scholarship on here before.
Untrue but school will probably honor their promise.
They have to honor the term of the scholarship, if they are on a 1 year scholarship they can not pull the scholarship mid year for poor performance. They “could” choose not to renew a scholarship. Most programs will not try to pull a kids scholarship for not performing, some power 5s will.
Also most programs will pull it for failing, legal trouble OR breaking team rules (long process but possible if he is caught drinking or whatever).
Experience from a couple years back is it depends on the conference.
The paperwork of offers from the power 5 conferences included dollars for all 4 years. From
other conferences it was one year.
For the power 5, I believe it is football flowing over into other sports. Essentially, PR from
the P5 conferences that they weren't treating the football players unfairly (no, we are not cutting
their scholarships if they are not any good or get hurt) flowing to non-football sports
(otherwise they would be on the hook for treating females unfairly I imagine).
Most likely he will be fine for 4 years as long as he follows team rules, stays eligible and works hard in his sport.
Scholarships are guaranteed for 1 academic year as long as the athletes meet the requirements listed in the scholarship. At my 2 institutions where I was the HC it was difficult to take scholarship $ away from athletes. We could not take it away due to poor performance.
What happens if the coaching staff changes?
Here is an example of an athlete I coached who lost his scholarship. He ran his first track meet in the spring then came down with an injury. He was required to attend all practices (he did but was on his phone most of the time) but more importantly he was required to get treatment 4X a week from the trainers. He went to the trainer 2-3 times a week the first month until he signed his scholarship for the following year. Once he signed, he never went back to the trainer after multiple conversations with me about this. He did not run in the spring, did nothing all summer and showed up for the fall claiming he was still injured. He was then asked to go to the trainer 5X a week for treatment in the fall. He went maybe 1X every other week. After many conversations and pages of documentation (meetings with me and attendance log with the trainer) his scholarship was pulled at the end of the semester.
The biggest challenge I had was with the athlete who did the very minimum to keep their scholarship. That was a small minority but those kids irked me the most ....
