Perfect "Random Dog" story...
I went on a run last night, not really having a time or distance goal in mind. I just wanted to run for 60 - 80 minutes easy. Well, just before 2 miles, I got surprised by a German Shepherd, who then decided to run with me. I wouldn't have minded, but he kept running into traffic, and it was driving me crazy. The last thing I needed was to see a dog get crunched by a car. So I kept yelling for him to get out of the road, and people kept slowing down to avoid him. After about a mile, I reached a road I could take where I knew there would be less cars. We went up that, and now I'm wondering how long he plans on staying with me. I'm not flying - about 7:00 miles, but I'm guessing he hasn't done a lot of this, so I was pretty curious. After about 5 miles (3 for him) I'm realizing he's in it for the long haul. I also recalled having read this thread a couple weeks ago.
Well, except for the occasional interesting smell, he stuck with me until about 7 miles in. That's when he started falling back a little. At around that point, I reached a light where I had to wait for traffic. There was another guy there, and when the dog finally caught back up, I said, "This dog's been running with me for over 5 miles now, and I have no idea whose he is." He looked shocked and said, "You're kidding me." I said, "Nope." and the light turned and we were off again. For the last mile, I had to keep turning around and encouraging him to keep up. At this point, I wanted to get him back to my place so I could figure out where he belonged. He was really dragging. Well, we finally finished, and after some phone calls for me, and two large bowls of water for him, I drove "Sabre" back to his owner.
When the guy opened the door, the dog ran in, and the guy looked pretty confused. I told him that if he'd ever wondered if his dog could run 7 miles, I had the answer for him. I'm assuming Sabre slept pretty well last night.
