Florence didn’t have qualifying or an Olympic medal at stake.
So Ingebrigtsen dominating a loaded field means absolutely nothing and doesn’t indicate that he could have been competitive in the Olympic final? I’m not suggesting he would have won easily, and he may not have even medaled given the conditions, but to pretend that he shouldn’t even be in the conversation is absurd.
Cheptegei ran a great race today and is a deserving champion. OP is an idiot for harping on the “slow” last lap. Full stop.
Now, are there athletes who weren’t in the field that could have outdone Cheptegei today? Yes. Bekele and Farah, without question (for those suggesting no one could replicate Cheptegei’s performance today). Certainly Barega and Gebrhiwet would have given him a run for his money as well. And then Ingebrigtsen, who showed great class in Florence and has a better kick than pretty much anyone in today’s final. Maybe the conditions would have been too much for him, maybe not. We’ll never know.
