That being said. Honestly the material taught at the best schools vs the worst isn't much different.. infact I will say of the hundreds of engineers I have worked with no one from a top 20 CS school has impressed me with one exception.

The school you get into has more to do with how good you are at standardized tests that test your English knowledge and don't go beyond math that you learn by 8th or 9th grade and doesn't touch any science.. probably why the above it true

If your talking about engineering you are wrong. CS folks only have to take a couple of calculas classes and a discrete math class for a BS degree. Engineers have to take 3 calc courses, diffeq, and probably another math class like linear algebra or partial diffeq. They are also likely to take a stats class and possibly stochastic processes. BS in CS has a lot less math than engineering. EEs also will take some signals and systems math classes and all the classes engineers take after the math classes are based on the math. There is some higher level math in CS if your building algorithms but if not, you are only doing logic.

You don't know what your talking about. There are no required board exams for engineers in the US unless you need to be a licensed as a "Profession Engineer" which most aren't. Yes there are differences in the quality of students at different schools. BYUs average GPA is 3.86 and average ACT is 29 for all incomming students so they are not dumb there. Stanford is 3.96 and 32, so yes compitition at Stanford would be a bit stiffer than BYU but not by miles. I got a BSME from BYU and an MSECE from UC Santa Barbara. UCSB is considered top of the top schools. I only did grad school there so can't compare undergrad classes there with BYU undergrad but I considered both very challenging.

If you go for a PE license (Professional Engineering) you have to take the Engineer in Training test first and then get work experience and go back and take you specific discipline test. Structural engineers have a very long road to haul. Those tests are very difficult. Whats your basis for saying they the are ,"not difficult. Period"?

In the U.S., there is usually no accreditation exam for those with certified degrees. The most common accreditation for degrees is by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). Most of the good programs are ratified by ABET, but the trend seems to be moving away from accreditation.

Some schools like Stanford have such a reputable name that they do not need ABET anymore. Other lesser known schools still need ABET to provide employers with a degree of confidence from graduates of these programs.

I'm not a mechanical engineer but I teach and work with mechanical engineers (I'm a scientist) and can assure you that while BYU is not the "best" place there is (whatever the hell that means), it has quite good mechanical engineering, as do many US universities. ( I'm no Mormon either.)

Complete BS. A Stanford/Harvard degree will always be broadly worth more than a non-top institution, regardless of major. An undergraduate degree is little worth in the amount of specific knowledge that it provides to 21 year olds. In this sense, a bachelor's is all about signaling.

Now if you are comparing the job market across different industries, that is a different issue. For example, stating that the engineering job market is more in-demand than say, consulting or general business management.

Wall Street, or the private equity industry, is one of the most lucrative industries. They routinely hire from top institutions such as Harvard/Stanford, regardless of major (you can even be a humanities major, they literally don't care). It follows that in some industries, in fact probably all industries besides engineering, an econ Stanford/Harvard degree is worth more on the job market than an ME BYU major.

I'm not saying that ME < econ. Actually, the standard engineering undergrad course load and difficulty is greater than econ. This is evidenced by the fact that it is not uncommon for engineering degrees to take 5 years to complete rather than the normal 4 years in the U.S.
