Yes, both Fisher and Kincaid are more talented than Williams.
And yes, their shoes, tracks and training are better.
Lol! You’re missing one thing they have that Williams didn’t.
I spent the 90’s sucking at running despite decent talent (sub 5 1600 & 1:58 800 at altitude at the start of freshman year of HS). Few things:
1) insufficient slow but consistent miles pre season, then straight into thermonuclear intervals or racing 2-4 events per meet. Good coaches now only race their kids 4-5 per season (max)!
2) Nutritional knowledge and general recovery knowledge - I thought by eating low fat and doing stupid stuff like rubbing sore legs with Ben gay (or taking ibuprofen) I was ‘helping to get rid of soreness’.
3) shoes were terrible for me. I’m suspicious that one of the most important parts of super shoes is that you can stress the engine without hurting the chassis.
4) we drank / partied way too much. The Sunday runs would still happen but at least the first 4 miles would be beer farts and chunder vomiting. Kids I see are not as interested in sex, booze and rock & roll as we were.

Running Times had good stuff still.
There were still things called books and Lydiard's stuff was easily accessible, as was Martin and Coe's Better Training for Distance Runners.
I was always a high mileage guy out of necessity because I had little talent :)

^This. I don´t understand this LRC nonsense that people didn´t have a clue how to train before the internet.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
