The caps are not sold with the brims bent, so what's the reason for bending them. Isd it some sort of fashion statement?

Do you mean curved? Most caps are still sold curved.
I think most MLB players curve the brim of the official New Era "straight brim" caps because that is how they have always worn them. I also think it may keep a little more sun out or your eyes when it is bent.
It’s an age thing. When I was young (I can’t believe I’m saying this) everybody bent the brims. I’m 43 and still can’t stand the look of a flat brimmed baseball hat, but hey, trends change and I’m an old man😀.
The flat brim is the fashion statement. It started in the 90s with the trend of looking like your clothes were fresh off the rack. Flat brim and leave the sticker on. Wear your Helly Hanson jacket with the tags on.
Hats are made to have the the brim curved. Look at the shape of the hat when the brim is straight. No ones head is that round.
Why do some people leave their brim flat?
As someone else said, it's because they are meant to be bent. It's more comfortable, provides a more snug fit, and blocks the sun better from your peripherals. There are two main types of caps fits though, fitted and flex. A fitted cap comes with a flat brim because it has to be bent to fit the specific shape of your head otherwise it will fit awkwardly around the ears. Flex fits don't have that issue though because they come fully compacted/bent then stretch out to fit your head.
Hope that answers your question OP
Straight brimmed = fanny pack

Style, baby
straight brims = saggy pants, wife-beaters, neck beards, trailer park living
It look better to me.
The inside edge of the brim follows the contour of your forehead better when you bend it for comfort. Simple. Also, your cap doesn't fly off as easy in strong wind if the brim isn't flat. Plus, flat brims just look dorky.
