Hobby jogger here. I’m training for my first marathon. I expect to hit about 45 mpw at my peak on 4 days a week running. I’d like to use cycling the other two days to add some cardio while resting everything that running wears out. I’m shooting for 3:10 or so based on my most recent half marathon times.
I have a good road bike and I’ve ridden centuries, used trainer road a little for winter training, etc. I like cycling and it seems like a good cross training option that I don’t need to drop while marathon training.
I’m looking for wisdom from LR on what type of cycling would best compliment marathon training and what days I should do it. For example, a week might look like this. It’ll change during the training season of course.
Day 1 - base mileage
Day 2 - 60-70 minute bike ride with an 800ft climb in the middle.
Day 3 - tempo intervals
Day 4 - base mileage
Day 5 - 120 min. ride with 1500ft climbing.
Day 6 - long run
Day 7 - rest
I could lengthen the rides. Cut out hills and ride intervals. Just make them steady easy rides. Swap days. Etc.
What say ye? What should I look for in terms of how hard to ride and when to do them relative to speed days and long runs?
Thx.
