I made a live updater for letsrun so you don't have to keep refreshing live threads

    i made this last night after trying to follow the USOT live thread. it adds a new button on the last page of every thread like this:

    then when you click the button it turns green and starts live updating like this:

    then all the new posts will just automatically appear on the bottom every 5 seconds, even if they're on different pages of the thread. you can also get desktop notifications like this, which is helpful if you want to follow a live thread but you only have one monitor and you're watching a meet stream in another window:

    (if you hover over the notifications they show the full post, and if you click on them they go to the post in question)

    LRC supporters club also has a live notifier, but it only checks for posts once every minute (compared to LRC live which checks every 5 seconds) and you still have to refresh the page to see the new posts, plus it doesn't do desktop notifications. i think LRC Live still might be lighter on the LRC servers than the supporters club notifier, because you have to explicitly turn it on / off per thread compared to being always on.

    i submitted this as a regular extension for both Chrome and Firefox but it will still be "under review" for a few days. so in the mean time you can install it as a user script, by installing Violentmonkey for Firefox here:

    then once Violentmonkey is installed you can go here and click the green "install this script" button, then click "confirm installation":

    then you can just go to the last page of any LRC thread and you should see the LRC Live button at the bottom. i've only tested this on Chrome and Firefox so far.

    How much burden does this place on the letsrun servers, if any? Thought maybe there is a reason why their version only updates every 60 seconds.

    Well I think it doesn't place that much, because it only gets one HTML page (doesn't have to load any other resources or images) per 5 seconds while it's on, compared to ~18 requests to letsrun.com per page load (and thousands of requests to ad servers) if you were to refresh manually. so if you refresh more than once every 90 seconds on a live thread, you're making more requests to LRC servers than using this addon. Also you can turn it on and off so it isn't on all the time like the supporters club notifier, if you just leave a tab open for a few hours that's making hundreds of requests versus this addon which can only be on for a minute if you want.

    i had a python script that I used to break out when there were events like this going on. It broke after the letsrun UI redesign that happened in the past year though

    nice, I think a lot of my old scripts don't work now either but I figure that's just part of the game.

    something else i've been thinking of is a synchronize user script such that you could sync up youtube livestreams etc with the NBC or peacock feeds muted, to be able to 'choose your own announcers' instead of the NBC announcers. but i would probably need a peacock membership to bother with that lol
