So I used to be primarily a distance runner and I never really lifted at all through high school and college. I have been fortunate to stay around low to mid 150lbs or so as a 6ft tall post collegiate competing in road races (as fast as low 2:20s marathon in 2019). Now I'm in my mid 30s and decided 4 months ago to get into lifting a bit, so I purchased a squat stand and barbell and I've been tracking my progress. My program is very simple, on M/W/F I do 3 sets of 8 reps each on barbell squat, bench press, and dead lift with 2 minutes rest in between each set. It's short and sweet and I can feel myself getting stronger. I've been very consistent with getting the 3 days of work in each week since I started.
When I started out I did 115lbs x 8 reps and 3 sets on the squat, 95lbs x 8 reps and 3 sets on the bench press, and 135lbs x 8 reps and 3 sets for the deadlift. 4 months later and I'm at 185lbs for the same reps and sets on squats, 135lbs for the bench press, and 195lbs for the deadlift. Mind you, I've continued to run at 30 miles per week for 6 days a week through all of this as well. I'm up to 162lbs but I don't feel huge and in general I feel really well balanced overall. How does this progress look to the more experienced lifters here?
Also, what other exercises or programs should I consider to take my lifting to the next level? I'm honestly doing this more for aesthetics than powerlifting purposes, and the compound movements seemed like the most bang for the buck to me. I'd like to incorporate pull ups since those are definitely a weak point for me at the moment and my biceps aren't really much bigger since I started. Any insight from more experienced folks is appreciated!
