September 29th 2019, Hall finishes 5th in Berlin with a four minute PB of 2:22. Now a top contender to make the US Olympic marathon team, the time is right for her to recover and focus on the marathon trials in February.
Instead, she races the US ten mile champs the next week. She wins, exhibiting great heart and strength, but why? At what cost?
She then decides to race another marathon, NYC, just 4 weeks later. She feels sick the day before but starts the race anyway. She fades and DNFs, feeling "weak and wobbly."
February 29th 2020, Atlanta, we see Sara grit her teeth early, struggle, and disappear. DNF.
If Sara was just running for the money, that's fine with me. Cash in while you can. I'm sure she got a generous appearance fee to double back at NYC 2019. But if she wanted to make the Olympics, and I got the impression that she did, then it seems to me that NYC, and probably even the us 10 mile, were poor decisions. Just my opinion.
Now she's gunning for the Olympic 10k. I hope she makes it. I'm sure today's win was a nice payday and a big confidence boost. I hope she has enough time to recover and be at her best for the trials in two weeks.
