Other ways to rephrase Rojo's initial post - "Despite having sub 28 guy Kiptoo pacing them for over half the race, nobody in the race, or indeed the whole season, get closer than 10s away from Chris Derrick's American Collegiate record, and a full 33s off of the all time Collegiate Record." Sounds a lot less impressive when you put it that way...
If you want to make the argument about spikes - zoom out. If the spikes are that good - the data should be there globally. It is interesting though how the the improvements in the NCAA seem at this point to be 1) perhaps more drastic than elsewhere in the world and 2) more drastic on the men's side than the women's side. E.g. Men's 1500m you have 9 guys running OTQ and Nuguse even running full standard, while zero women do it. In fact Sage Hurta's collegiate best this year is still over 2s slower than OTQ time. Similar trends follow down through the distances. This is curious because studies on the road shoes found that they gave a greater benefit to women.
FYI - from a logical POV this is a very similar argument to all the people who were crowing "What super spikes? Mo Farah and Marc Scott run 27:50/27:49 at British champs despite boing boing spikes and wavelight! The spikes are worth 20-40 seconds for a 10k??! You telling me Scott and Farah are running 28:30 without Dragonflies???" Neither are that convincing as to the true benefit of spikes.
