That's because no one is surprised. As sad as it is, without Carius really involved, there's no way they're going to keep up the past success. He was that program. It's pretty clear the new guy has no idea what he's doing.
Programs have off years but to say the "new guy" aka Frank Grammaroso who started coaching at NCC in 1983 "has no idea what he's doing" shows YOUR lack of knowledge. NCC has been a creature of habit since the 80s & 90s. A quick google would show what they do Monday - Sunday 52 weeks a year. A coaching switch isn't to blame for a down year. Teams have off years for many reasons injuries, illnesses, large graduating classes, etc. To blame it on the "new guy" is like blaming a teacher for a student not studying for an exam. NCC's history shows they have the ability to turn it on and podium but with the luck they have had this year they could be 10-15. I'll say this I'd bet the bank on them being on the podium next year.
