This children who think they are the opposite gender have a mental disorder. Gender Dysphoria. Parents who encourage this who be charged with abuse. If their child had an eating disorder they wouldn’t reinforce this by telling the child they are fat and encouraging them to not eat. But if they have gender dysphoria, they think it’s acceptable to encourage the child is encouraged that they encourage they were meant to be, and can be the opposite gender. This must be about the only mental disorder that is encouraged instead of treating. No matter what anyone wants to say, it is not biologically possible to change sex’s/genders and there are inherently differences between males and females - % body fat, muscle mass, strength, endurance, etc.
You’re anecdote is ridiculous too. So do you think that every young girl who likes boy things, i.e. a “tomboy”, actually wants to be a boy? That’s the liberal mind set now. Well, my son likes dolls so he must wants to be, and feel like he should be a girl. My daughter won’t wear dresses and , hates dolls, and likes to play football, so that must mean she really wants and thinks she would be a boy. It’s absurd.
Yes, this has everything to do with protesting girl’s and women’s opportunities. Women fought hard extremely hard to have the same athletic opportunities and scholarships. Back when my mom was in high school there were no girls sports and limited club sports in college. Now the left thinks it’s fine to force women and girls to compete against biological males. It’s not okay and it will deny biological girls and women opportunities.

What age do you propose then? It’s pretty obvious this won’t be an issue for a single year.
How about something like this?
11 & under -- no restrictions.
12-15 -- puberty blocker required.
16 & over -- Hormone replacement therapy required.
You think trans individuals should be required to take serious medication with serious side effects in order to play sports?
Damn.
The causes of gender dysphoria are not fully understood yet, but the most likely explanation is the lack of androgen exposure during the brain development. (This is in case of male to female.)
If this is true, then transgender people are somewhat similar to intersex people with androgen insensitivity. The difference is whether your brain fails to get exposure to androgen, or your entire body does not respond to androgen. Either way, it's something beyond the control of the individual, and in a civilized society, those individuals should not be punished.
But the most important thing is that there is no known "cure" for gender dysphoria. We only have treatment to alleviate the symptoms. In other words, we cannot alter one's brain, but we can change the physical appearance of a person to make it easier for the brain to handle the situation.
So the question is what the most important organ of a human being is. What makes that person unique? Is it one's brain or something else?

Serious side effects? Not as serious as the effects of not taking the medication.
Are you one of those people who think we should avoid covid vaccine because our arms could get sore?
No one who is born a male should compete with females. Plain and simple. Doesn’t matter who you identify as after biology has already taken its course. If you let people who are born makes, compete with females, you might as well get rid of the female category.

Seriously dumb post. How is pumping your body full of hormones it isn’t supposed to have good in any way?
There is no "evidence" that one's brain function is the result of androgen exposure or lack thereof. (I mean, how do you "test" that with the brains of actual people?) What we know is the structure and function of trans women's brains.
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27255307/https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18761592/https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21195418/It's true that many people who experience gender dysphoria are not trans. There are many with mild dysphoria who do not need any transition.
And I couldn't care less what trans activists consider transphobia. I am not into wokeism, political correctness or identity politics. If some activists want to call me transphobic, why should that matter to me? It's not like I will lose my job because of what I anonymously posted on this message board.

More blatant bigotry posted on these pages. Not surprising at this point.

We don't know why trans women's brains are different from cis men's brains. What we know is that their brains are different. (See the first study from 2016.) And the only explanation ever provided so far is this idea about lack of prenatal androgen exposure. If you know of any other explanation, feel free to post it here.

The above article says "However, since sexual differentiation of the genitals takes place in the first two months of pregnancy and sexual differentiation of the brain starts in the second half of pregnancy, these two processes can be influenced independently, which may result in extreme cases in trans-sexuality."
This is a HYPOTHESIS. A POSSIBLE explanation. Nothing has been proved.
That's why I wrote "IF" this is true, because I DON'T KNOW whether it is indeed true or not.
So what is your question again?

So where is the evidence that gender identity is affected by social environment after birth?

Coz I don't believe as you seem to that "gender identity" is real & universal. I think it's a mental construct that some people have, but most people do not.
If you don't believe gender Identity is real, no wonder you don't believe transgenderism is real.
