She's running great...at 100 hurdles. It's worth noting that it took until this week for Shamier Little to run 400 hurdles, while she's been killing it at 200-800 meters. Same deal for Rai Benjamin with him running 400m flat. Dalilah Muhammad hasn't run a 400m hurdles race yet. Nothing from Warholm, and just one 400m for Samba.
If anything, there seems to be consensus from top hurdlers to race sparingly in terms of the 400m hurdles. It's pretty much unlike any other event, and as a positive clearly Sydney is getting results and improving in the 100m hurdles. That being said, at some point got to put down a mark.
This all makes sense. I mean, it doesn't if I just go by my own instinct, which would be to run your main race once in a while, certainly by end on May anyway. But what do I know? This poster points out that a lot of them aren't doing it yet. Maybe that is good. I suspect she'll do one soon.
By the way, I don't know why there's confusion about this, but she normally goes right leg first. I knew this without looking anything up and was sort of surprised some of you didn't remember that. So, although she has done the high hurdles 'off-leg', this Mt. Sac race wasn't one of them.
That having been said, she has at times had to 'take a left' as she has said to post-race reporters, late in the race. You'd have to ask her and coach, but I get the feeling she's trying and training to do the Ed Moses idea of the same number of steps all the way through. Most of them take an extra step by the end of the back stretch and some end up same leg twice on the last 2, which is to say 2 extra steps compared to hurdles 1 to 2 or 2 to 3. I think she only went left on the last one in the narrowly lost WR race. I believe Moses considered that just one of the secrets to his success - 15 (or whatever - it's hard to count on YouTube) all the was as opposed to 16 for a couple then 17 for the last.
Anyway, I'm a fan and approve of mixing it up as long as she's training endurance with some workouts an 800 runner would do. I suspect she is and am looking forward to her season.
