I got suckered into trying it last summer. I kept hearing so many stories about how "real" they tasted, and I keep thinking I should cut down on the amount of meat I eat, so I tried it.
And it was awful. Like the OP said, very first bike I was like "uh this tastes rather fake and toxic" and the taste stuck around for hours.
Forget that garbage. If I want meat taste I'll eat meat. And if I want to be vegetarian, then I will not be concerned about replicating "meat taste."
Just make a dang bean burger like has been done since forever. I can actually eat those, and not think I'm chemically modifying my insides.
Black beans, a few spices, done. It's not trying to be what it's not, and can be fairly decent. That, or a mushroom.
I like pretty much all of Beyond Meats offerings, their brats are my favorite closely followed by their breakfast sausage. The burgers are good but I prefer impossible meat for a ground beef substitute.
As far as health goes, folks here sure are brain washed. Ever heard of heart disease, cancer and diabetes all of which are linked to red meat? Worried about 'chemicals' but probably forget that theres plenty of them just in your drinking water let alone the other issues others have brought up already. But people dont think with their thinking caps apparently. Unless you are legit living off grid and raising your own animals to eat these arguments make little sense at all.
And another one that just popped in my head that you never hear much about is listeria of which hundreds of people die from every year which is mostly linked to, you guessed it cattle/beef.
Anyway, I have been enjoying perfect health since having gone plant based/vegan several years ago and I have the blood work to prove it. This is with enjoying things like Beyond Meat several times a week. But to each their own.
Also, I guess I am just sort of curious when folks are talking about the 'toxic chemicals' in Beyond Burgers, which of these ingredients are you specifically talking about?
Water, Pea Protein*, Expeller-Pressed Canola Oil, Refined Coconut Oil, Rice Protein, Natural Flavors, Cocoa Butter, Mung Bean Protein, Methylcellulose, Potato Starch, Apple Extract, Pomegranate Extract, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Vinegar, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Sunflower Lecithin, Beet Juice Extract (for color).

Didn’t you see someone on the prior page already “debunked” ‘fake meat’ and “proved” that animal flesh is ‘healthy’ by posting links from orgs that are directly involved in, profit from, or directly promote animal ag? :)
I’m with you, I’m so much healthier and injury resistant (since this is a running forum after all) than before cutting out all of the animal products.
What does a diet look like using plant-based products?

What's a canola?
I'm interested in trying. Meat does not seem very important.
You can easily eat enough protein without meat. It's not like I feel great after eating chicken, even.
Don't equate the standard American fast food diet "meat/heart disease" with a diet not consuming American fast food. Diabetes tied to red meat consumption? What?
eating meat less often/as a special treat 1x per week or so >>> meat imitations. this is what i've done for years and i feel pretty good about it. i never buy meat at the grocery store unless it's i'm grilling brats a few times a year. but at restaurants the veggie options almost always suck, so i'll get meat then. that's generally once a week.
the idea that it's not a "meal" unless it contains meat is outrageous.
Yes, I saw that bit of nonsense. My favorite is when people talk about the impact of plant agriculture glossing over the fact that so much of it is grown as animal feed. Somehow they think 2000lb cattle have a nonexistent calorie requirement.
Yes, the link is quite well established in you are inclined to simply google 'diabetes linked to red meat' or something along those lines you should find the info. It is the high amounts of saturated fat but also from what I recall cooking any meat at high temps increased the risk for type 2 diabetes same with cancers.

It is the most toxic of the junk food components commonly consumed. Research shows it contributes as a primary trigger of diabetes, cancer and heart disease, among many other metabolic diseases. This class of seed oils was originally a waste product used for lubricating machinery, but in the '70s it was found to be profitable as a cheap alternative to healthy natural whole fats.

Oh yeah, the vegan "BigMeat" lie. Those evildoers spend a couple of million a year promoting the pleasure of the flesh. Not like the pure and unsullied $Trillion investment people like Bill Gates have made in the oh-so natural industrial fake food "meat".
Anyway:

I have only seen like a handful of superfanatics on plant-based diets with almost neurotic amounts of exercise, and not all of them found good health outcomes.
Usually obese, unhealthy people promote these weird fads, while cultured people with Mediterranean diets did alright without worrying about minutia.

The #1 thing that the French *didn't do* that all the obese/sick countries did was to substitute industrial seed oils for healthy butter and animal fats.
The two large populations consuming the most per capita animal products are Hong Kong and Japan. They are also, in that order the world's longest life expectancy.

Yeah anyone who thinks the meat industry is sustainable for the planet has to have their head pretty far up there. Must be one of those "alternate facts"

All I eat is saturated fat, and my blood work is fine.
Type 2 Diabetes, anyway, is caused by people stuffing sugar into their faces, then trying to moderate it via medications.
Well I am happy you are healthy. All I am saying is the science says there is a link. I am sure the deadly combination of high sugar high fat is a large part of it.
