I actually never believe this is the case. Or any of it's permutations ("Europeans think America is a joke", etc.).
The absolute fact of the matter is that the vast majority of the world would rather be in America then where they currently are (except a handful of highly-developed, post-industrial countries/cities).
It is easy to say "Americans are being laughed at on the world stage" when you're an angry, inexperienced youngster in Europe or something projecting your jealousies and desires regarding America.
At the end of the day:
1. American military might underwrites all global trade and has been the cornerstone of decreasing large-scale military conflicts.
2. The wealth in this country allows the poorest among us to live like the upper class does in the majority of other countries.
3. Europe has been at peace from internal and external threats for decades because of treaties with the USA.
4. The foreign aid of this country keeps sub-Sahara Africa alive (from AIDS) and feeds large swathes of other countries. If we stopped sending antivirals to Africa (and no one else stepped in), it is estimated that 30-50% of the population of Africa would be dead in 5 years. Weird coming from such a racist country....
5. When sh&t hits the fan somewhere, American ingenuity and resource is usually the source of the solution.
With this understanding, what's there to be laughing at?
Stop consuming media liars like John Oliver.
