I did a 5k time trial today and thought I'd be a little bit faster than I was at this point. I've been running 40-45 mpw the last few weeks and at least 30-35 since late Feb. It was humid and 81'F , with 70% humidity at 6 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio.
Went 7:05, 14:35 (7:28), 22:17 (7:42), 0:46 for the last 200m and finished in a disappointing 23:03. I thought I'd be high 21s at this point, even though it's early in my training block. I haven't done much speedwork, to be fair, but I've done a few hill sessions already and tons of long runs.
1) How much does the heat/humidity truly affect races? I wonder if I would have broke 22 in good weather (45-50'F, cloudy). It was hot and humid the first mile and a half, then it was a downpour to the finish, but much cooler.
2) How do you deal with a side stitch at mile 2.5 of a 5k? I was doing great, hard effort by feel but not killing myself, but at 2.5 a side stitch happened (I NEVER get those, even on my 12-14 milers at my steady 8:05-8:10 pace).
3) Why does McMillan not allow you to use the pace calculator? I tried today and it threw me behind a paywall and asked me to sign up. I was able to use it just yesterday.
I'm disappointed because my 5k pace was averaging only 40 seconds faster than my EZ to moderate LR pace I did on Saturday (1:53:51 for 14 miles, 8:07-ish effort, but it felt strong and effortless). Yet during the 5k, I got MUCH slower as I went on. I also made sure I hydrated well today and stretched longer than normal/warmed up with more effort than usual, plus the course itself isn't too hilly.

The only thing I can think of is I went out too fast, and should I have gone 7:25, 7:20, 7:20, 0:45 to break 23?
