Can we please stop trying to convert results into "pre-shoes time"?
Runners from previous decades had epo, steroids and all kinds of other fun things to inject. Our generation has super shoes, which is lots better and to be honest, our only hope to better those dubious WRs.
Jim Ryun ran on cinder track with heavy spikes, we know that. Sad for Jim Ryun, but now we have pletora of runners, who have run 1:42 on synthetic track, that might have been at least as good or even better than Jim Ryun.
1/10
Ryun would probably do quite well today with sensible training, mondo tracks, and the (possibly) super shoes. The 1:42 runners of today would not run as fast back in Ryun’s day. Some of them wouldn’t do near so well even in the 80s. But so what? Different eras. So many variables.
Today’s runners have the shoes - and many of them, especially certain third world athletes allowed to cheat due to behind the scenes politics - also have EPO and other drugs to help them. It isn’t only shoes in their cases.
