It's not relevant to this discussion, but this isn't true. Martin Smith won men's team titles at Wisconsin with an individual CC champ (Hacker). He also won women's team titles at Virginia with another individual CC champ (Leslie Welch).
Smith is good! but he couldn't do it at the same school!! wasn't that good!
Um, well less than 50% of collegiate coaches are also coaching post-collegians. In fact, pretty much all the decent Americans (Ritz, Broe, Goucher, Slattery, Shay, Browne, Webb, Hartman, Culpepper, Berryhill, all the Hansons runners) aren't being coached by college coaches. So quit reaching deep into your nether regions to bring up idiotic and untrue babble.
Better a nerd than a moron, not that it takes a "nerd" to string together coherent sentences, at least if you've managed to graduate high school with anything better than a C average. Those who are educated enough will be able to "check" their own "grammar" and not make stupid mistakes. I would like to make the point that, in my opinion the real policy hurting American running is Title IX.
Although it's obvious that great teams can be made solely of Americans, I don't begrudge foreigners the chance to run and go to school here.
If anything it enhances the competition and enables them to get a U.S. education.
In my opinion the part about appreciating other cultures doesn't really happen, unless by meeting a foreigner someone has a realization that people are people everywhere. I give most of us more credit, though, we already know that.
