It won’t matter because he’s built for the thon. He doesn’t have the wheels to be a world factor on the track. Also XC is an obsolete event because there’s no money in it.
My hope and sense is that Smith is developing him long term. Knowing that the thon will be his bread and butter. I wouldn’t be surprised if he remains coached by Smith once he goes pro.
Essentially he’s at NAU to win XC TEAM titles and develop for his future in the thon. It doesn't matter if he wins an individual title.

If someone is world class in the marathon he'll be equally good in the 10000. For Young, it will come down to whether he wants to stay on the track. He can also do both like Lopes, Salazar, Shorter and others have done.
Young, Dudek, Methner, Tuohy. The odds are stacked against high school phenoms wining NCAA titles. There are so many foreigners in the mix and so many grood runners that improve more in college.
He did fine. It’s arguable that the two guys in front of him shouldn’t have even been eligible to compete… nothing wrong with losing to a few (extremely) seasoned veterans.
There could very well be more international athletes who come out of nowhere or one of the people not far behind him who blossom into NCAA champions. Winning is very hard, it's not unrealistic that he will never win.
It isn't arguable. They are eligible. You act like they faked their paperwork or somehow cheated. Maybe Nico shouldn't be able to train at elevation because the 2 guys how beat him don't.

Only way Nico was winning was off a 13:15 paced race. He set that up for Hacker. Nico does not have raw sprint speed. He will be a great marathoner but anything under 10k is too short

And more of the same with his brother Lex, although Leo might have a bit more speed.

He hasn’t even turned 20 yet and you’ve already him banned him to the marathon. He ran really well tonight and finished with a 55. He’s steadily improved since HS so how do you know he won’t go into next year’s NCAA with a 13:00 under his belt? A lot of you guys have been building up Sprout, and rightfully so, but after tonight, maybe he should be thinking ultras.

or if the two people ahead of him don't have 11 years on him combined.
