I disagree and think thon pace is ideal tempo pace IF one's legs are tired from heavy mileage, which should be the case for marathon training.
Re OP's question, for the marathon, I view long runs as the key workouts. Speedwork seems mostly irrelevant, though some easy speed sessions might add some nice variety and keep things fresh/interesting.
Yeah, this has always been my thought process in the marathon where I've had reasonable success. If you're putting in the work mileage-wise, hitting something at threshold mid-week, then running marathon pace on the weekends is a grind. I think it's a mistake to do long tempos at threshold. Would rather hold marathon pace for longer, knowing that you will be running faster on fresh legs.
I don't get why you wouldn't train at marathon pace in a marathon build. Call up the Hansons + NAZ Elite + Pfitz if you don't think it has a place.
