Nobby or anyone else out there, do you have any insights into Kengo’s Lake Biwa prep? Has Japanese marathon training philosophy (in general) changed much over the past few years?

Better question. What are his shoes???
There's some Japanese runners on Strava( Jo Fuduka, the fastest one I know off the top of my head). Yuki Kawuachi and other Japanese runners tweet stuff on their training. TBH, other than minor stuff, training hasn't changed, just the shoes.

The correct spelling is Jo Fukuda, for those looking for his strava. I just added Yusuke Ogura (2:06:51 last weekend) to my Strava feed. I haven't dug into his training, but it looks like he's been posting his training on Strava since July.

Very easy! 8:37 miles for that run.

Inside sources have just revealed that he is indeed wearing special Kengo-roo shoes which were specifically requested by the manager of Kengo. The mystery deepens.

Even easier for this recovery jog. 4 miles averaging 11:30. Ogura is the Japanese record holder for the half marathon (1:00:00), by the way. His fast runs are fast, and some of his fast runs are also "easy", like 5K in 14:16 "easy".
