Boston is right...i do pool workouts with no belt, and do intervals with my hands above my head. My total time gets up to almost 2 hours....no belt....not a puss.

It can be done effectively without a belt, you just have to run really hard its as simple as that, if you run slow you sink.
use fins like you would if you were going scuba diving you will get a better workout.
Sounds like Randy has spent one too many days in the pool injured.
I've spent a year in the pool (2hr workouts per day) and I know it can't be done on a daily basis without a belt - strong core or not.
Aqua jogging does not require a belt. In fact it is extremely difficult to work hard with a belt on.
In my experience, I have had much more success with maintaining fitness while injured by swimming with a masters program and cycling. These are not running specific, but definitely much more interesting. If there are gains to be had by aqua jogging over swimming and cycling, they are miniscule, and require mind-numbing monotony to achieve.
tell me about...mind numbing barely describes pool running for the past year. that's why i cycle now
Randy, think you should try without a belt, much better workout... Maybe you should try strenghtening your core and doing the plank.
Well without a belt I found that I wasn't really simulateing running. I was more struggeling to just stay afloat and I was working more of my upper body than my lower body. I do have a strong core I think, probably not as strong as some people but I religiously do ab workouts 5 times a week for about 30 mins each time. I've been working out my abs for the past 4 years so I think I'm okay in that area.
