90% vo2max and 90% HRmax are not interchangeable. You can use HR as a proxy for vo2max . For example a HR of 95% is about a 90% vo2max. It seems like a minor difference but we are talking about doing stuff at 10k pace versus 5k which is pretty noticeable when you are doing a workout . I can step on a track and run 30 mins at HM pace as a workout. Stepping on the track and doing 30mins at 10k pace is almost impossible as that is almost a race with no taper.
