So I've heard through the grapevine, that multiple top performing distance runners at Saginaw Valley State University (yeah Jason Hartmann's old stomping grounds) have been suspend for running on "marked off" treadmills in the rec center and apparently "talking back" to a rec center employee.
For back story: the university has apparently banned running outside on any day below 0. But they also have only 4 treadmills open in the whole rec center. So this has obviously created a dilemma for athletes. A few decided to run on some treadmills that were next to each other (ya know like the good old days before all this hysteria) with masks on!! Apparently this was too much for the work-study rec center front desk worker to handle, so she decided to confront one of the athletes. This led to the athlete giving somewhat of an attitude (yeah not great but whatever) and he still ended up getting off the treadmill. This was too much for work-study to handle she emails the PRESIDENT of the university, who, in true-form, does nothings and passes it to his (also do nothing) AD. The AD decides that he is in-fact the judge, jury, and executioner, and suspends these athletes for weeks (after having to be talked down from expelling them from the team permanently... WTF), bans the distance coach from ever having an opportunity to ever be head coach, and officially alienated the most successful team on his entire campus.
This over-policing by an AD is disgusting and needs to be addressed. To suspend national caliber athletes over a minor verbal disagreement, is absolutely insane. This is something you WOULD NOT see happen to a football or basketball athlete. And not to mention these athletes have no where else to practice!! Lastly, the blatant disrespect to the only successful coach on their campus is nothing short of disgusting. Mr. AD needs a reality check!!
This has gone TOO FAR - D2 School suspends top athletes for.... Practicing????

D2 is funny. P5 schools have separate centers for real athletes and they have more treadmills than could ever be used.
-
Imagine if Jason Hartmann was still there... Or even Mike Watson....
To be honest Saginaw Valley has had some pretty controversial things happen with their athletic department the past couple years. A womens bball coach getting fired for relations with a player, not making Jason Hartmann stay, letting ineligible atheltes play. (Do you see a trend) You could very well see a 30 for 30 soon about SV. But in all my years of life I wouldve never thought they would suspend a dude that just ran 13:50's in the 5k. THIS AD IS BRAINLESS. I hope there is some kind of restitution for this bs. -
Bad for the resume of athletes involved. I hope not CarLee
Bad for recruiting.
Bad look for all involved. -
One week they have their first sub 14 performer, the next he’s not allowed to train and nearly off the team. Crazy.
-
Maybe this could have been avoided if they just got their running stuff from their locker room and just ran from their apartment? Sub 0 is not that bad if you dress for the weather.
-
They were told that they need to run inside by their training staff
-
All this would have never happened had they hired Tony Filipek.
-
Maybe this is payback for them recruiting athletes from CMU
-
And now can we hear the other side of the story?

False. I know my midwest P5 alma mater has a grand total of 0 treadmills dedicated for athletes. If you want to run on a treadmill you have to go to the regular student rec building. -
Which one? None that I am aware of. It isn't Iowa, Wisconsin. Illinois, ND, or Michigan. They all have facilities for the athletes.
-
I think the student athletes who are being punished are saying the same thing right about now. Sounds like a lack of due process compounded with a harsh punishment for nothing more than a verbal spat.

Again, just freaking run outside. They weren't "allowed" to run outside? So just do it anyway, and like somebody else said, just do it from your house so you don't get in trouble. College runners do all kinds of things they aren't supposed to.
Or, they could have just waited and taken turns on the treadmill? Yelling at a staff member seems like a temporary suspension is appropriate. In a few years these kids will have graduated. If they yell at their coworkers, they'd be fired. They're still basically kids, so the consequences are less severe. -

This 100%. I have no sympathy for someone who breaks clearly set rules and then gets upset with someone who is just doing their job. It is incredibly infuriating when someone is breaking the rules where I work, and when I politely try to tell them that whatever they're doing is not allowed, they get an attitude.
A suspension seems like a completely fair punishment.
Keep in mind: It looks really bad if your star athlete goes into a restaurant, breaks rules, then gets an attitude with whatever employee is trying to prevent them from breaking rules. It reflects incredibly poorly on your institution, and if it gets out, it is the fastest way for me (and many others) to despise that school, team, and athlete and hope they never win anything. That may seem harsh, but anyone who has worked in retail/service knows exactly what I mean. -
who cares? just run outside and quit being such a baby. You don't count as an alum if you never graduated.
-
So, if they have only 4 treadmills, why not just move them so they are 6 feet apart? Is the rec center the size of a closet?
-
That is done detailed grapevine you have there. Sounds like you were directly involved.
Lesson for all college kids....
Choices have consequences. By choosing your actions you are also choosing your consequences, whether you agree it not.
Maybe this example will make the next person think before acting. -

Bingo! Follow the rules and don’t act like a dick when you get called out for breaking the rules. Full stop. -

Agreed, sounds like they put the rec center worker in a difficult situation to begin with by blatantly ignoring rules and then yelled at her for doing her job. Obviously a tough situation for the athletes too, but they should have waited turns at the treadmill. I imagine this thread was created for venting and catharsis, which is well and good, but sounds like the blame is primarily on the athletes to me. I'm sure the AD is a bit of a dick but the 'judge, jury, and executioner' metaphor seems a bit dramatic IMO.
