I'm almost 37 and speed work is difficult. I can grind 3-5 mile tempos all day at 5:45 pace and love 10-12 mile progression runs ending usually around tempo pace.
But getting up to speed is problematic. It is like I have one speed. Getting down to anything beyond 5:00 pace is next to impossible. Even on 200s. Breaking 35 takes herculean effort where sub 30 was almost "easy" in college.
I know I'm getting older and speed is gonna slip, but anyone got any tips for how to counteract or what else I can do to get that turnover back?
I want to break 16 in the 5k and aerobically feel like I'm super fit (avg 61mpw for over a year now) but can't get the speed work done that I know would prove it is possible. I did run a 4:54 in September when I was testing to see if I could pull it off for the first time in 14 years.
Thoughts for this old man? Or am I just relegated to running halfs and fulls for the rest of my competitive days?
