I wouldn't call going to college = "abandoning" his current situation.

As stated he is a big time rock climber and that has been his focus. Probably why he is going to NAU.
Here is article about the race and a bigger one coming about Hobbs.
Poor kid, has to go through life named Hobbs.
Great post
Also an insight into why NAU
I was just going to post that
Then I read that article
Ah yes but a complete step is 2 consecutive foot falls with opposite feet touching down consecutively (ex. left foot ground touch, right foot ground touch).
What Kessler did was NOT a complete step(only left foot touched down inside the rail).
The officials made the correct judgement with no DQ.
Triple jump: Hop, Step, Jump
Here is our article on the race and where Kessler came from. We are going to do a longer feature on him later in the week as we've already spoken to him and his dad and are talking to Warhust soon. Hobbs also will be on the podcast.
He looks very excited in that picture.
No, I would not call that a DQ.
You can see he doesn't gain on the runner in front of him.
DQs need to be subjective in my opinion and only be called if there is an advantage gained.
If he was passing someone on the inside and took the one step to get by, that would be using the inside of the rail to gain advantage.

No way this kid runs only 30 miles a week from his coach
I would not be surprised if his mileage is low, just like some people are naturally anaerobic as-in sprinters, some people are also naturally aerobic and don't require as much mileage. The LRC is enamored with high mileage and thinks that's the way to go for everyone.; it's actually counterproductive for some kids. The amount of mileage also has to be in line with your stage of development, becasue you run fast times does not mean your body is ready for professional athlete type training. I think some of America's great athletes over trained at a young age and were worn down by their early to mid-20s. With Hoobs type talent, focus on development and save the super hard training for when money and global championship medals are at stake. I thought NAU was a bad choice for German Fernandez; training for and running a 10k XC race at age 17 was a bit too much. I know he was capable and had run long distances before, but becasue you can don't mean you should. With that said, I have always steered true middle distance runners away from schools competing for XC titles; Michigan, Georgetown, Penn State or a Nova type school would have been a better choice for me.
It is frustrating that we (UofM) lost the best boy and best girl (US and Europe!) in the country in 2 consecutive years! And our teams have been attracting a lot of talent! But in reality, I guess when I was 18, getting out of town sounded pretty good. And if running is your thing, NAU seems to be the place. (The girl went to Stanford...so...I get it).
Luckily for you, German Fernandez didn’t run for NAU.
BTW, if anyone didnt see the race, the post race interview was pretty endearing for the lack of a better word.

Don't think he gained time from it, just a HS runner not used to racing with a rail
Isn't there always a rail? I gues I don't really know. Almost all of my racing has been on asphalt, even in HS, so maybe there's not. Anyway, Quigley got DQd for less than this, although Mo took a bigger shortcut than her during the same event and didn't.
Indoor is a different animal

This kid is so new, what is his potential? This was his first race against pros. It was his first race on a banked track. It was his first official race breaking 4:20! This kid may run 3:55 indoor and 3:50 outdoor. He may run 3:33 this summer. He may be in that Tracksmith uniform forever and never wear the NAU uniform.
Agreed.
He looked incredibly poised. I don't think I saw any panic or aver reaction in his running.
He seems to have great potential

You obviously have no idea of the rules.
A DQ does ***not*** require that a runner was "passing someone on the inside and took the one step to get by." That is ridiculous.
Runners in the 200-400 and steeplechase are DQd ***all the time*** for a half-inch of their forefoot touching the line on a bend. It's not just a matter of whether you pass someone. (There are countless examples of these DQs happening with no massive "advantage" achieved.)
***The rules are that you don't run inside the bend.*** Competitors have to complete the race in control of their movements, running at speed while also staying in the legal lane and not shortening the race.
This is why it is called a "rule."
I rest my case. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x41fPUtNfTw&feature=emb_logo
Resting my case on another DQ. https://www.letsrun.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screenshot-93.png
Still resting my case. These are all DQs by the rules. https://www.letsrun.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/kemboi-dq-e1471470519106.jpg

It seems like Michigan has so much talent at the high school level every year.
I would go to Michigan in a heartbeat if I were this kid. Amazing academics, good running culture and program, and you already know the college well because you live there.

He was running 5 minutes at the start of the 2019 season. How did this happen? He didn't really get good until senior year XC. He ran more than a 20 second PR to set a new national record?
Most likely just a super talented kid that was undertrained and finally decided he wanted to go fast.
Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda Blah, blah, blah...
The point is bucko, is he was not DQ'd. -Period-
Do you really think the officials are going to go back and ex post facto DQ him now?
Nope. New HS indoor record.
Next topic, please. Let this kid have his day in the sun.
