So I was curious as to what's the fastest development any of you guys have ever seen in a runner? What are the fastest times you have ever seen for a runner in their first year in XC or Track. Because there was a runner I went to school with back in the day who I think may have caught on to the sport of distance running faster than anyone I have ever seen.
Story: About a dozen years ago when I was in high school I was the fastest runner on my team. As a sophomore I had personal bests of 9:18 in the 3200m, 4:20 in the 1600m and 14:54 in the 3 mile. I had been running since 6th grade. During my winter track season a kid in my grade joined our track team. He was previously a soccer player and wanted to give distance running a try because he had always done well in the gym class mile. He had no prior experience distance running, whatever running he had ever done was done through soccer or the mandatory gym class mile/pacer test. He started running in mid-January and after a month of training he ran 4:48 for the indoor mile at our first meet. I thought that was impressive enough but he kept improving and by the end of indoor season in early March he had personal bests of 4:35 for the 1600m and 2:04 for the 800m. When outdoor came around he dropped his mile to 4:28 to 4:24 to 4:21 to finally a 4:16 by the end of May. He ran the 3200m once and clocked 9:34 and ran the 800m 3 or so times and ran 1:54. He even ran a 51 for the open 400m. So after just 5 months of training with no prior experience he had PR's of 9:34-4:16-1:54 and 51 and was challenging me in workouts. I had been running for years and this kid passed me up in 5 months. It's not like he had done any insane training either. He ran 50-55 mpw and did pretty standard workouts like 12x400m, 5x1000m, 4 mile tempos ect. He of course ditched soccer and switched over to XC in the fall and in his first XC season as a junior he ran 14:24 and placed 30th at FL. The rest of high school progression went like this.
Jr year:
14:24 (3 mile, 30th @ FL)-8:55.8 (3200m)-4:08.3 (1600m)-1:53 (800m)
Sr year
14:20 (3 mile, 5th @ FL)-8:47.3 (3200m)-4:05.7 (1600m)-1:51 (800m)-49.9 (Open 4)
I have been running for 15 years now and I have NEVER seen or heard of anyone running that fast in their first track season. I mean 4:16 in the mile after 5 months?! It usually takes at least a couple years of consistent training to get to that point. He ultimately got a scholarship at a D1 school and ran 23:18 (8k)-14:14 (5k)-8:08 (3k)-3:46 (1500m) and quit after his Jr year due to a litany of injuries.
Anyways I am convinced this kid has to be the most talented guy ever. If you guys have ever heard or know of runners running quicker times than this in a very short period of time please post.
