Whilst scrolling through my Instagram feed the other day, I noticed an advertisement from a company called Whoop. I did not know much about Whoop before I saw the advertisement but I have come to learn that Tinman Elite and several other professional athletes, including Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, are sponsored by them.
“What sort of product do they sell?” I thought to myself.
I took a quick look through their Instagram and saw that they have a device that advises the user on how to recover more efficiently. After taking a deeper look at their product, I have come to the conclusion that it is 100% a gimmick.
Their main product is the Whoop Strap 3.0. The Whoop Strap 3.0 (their main product) boasts some impressive technology:
-A “Pro-Knit” band which is “engineered for high performance lifestyle” and also includes a rubber grip on it in order to “prevent slip” while on your wrist.
-24/7 Data: It measures your heart rate while you're wearing it! How innovative!
-5 day battery life.
When you purchase the Whoop Strap 3.0, you are also purchasing a monthly subscription to their app which provides analytics on recovery and how to optimize your sleep schedule.
Whoop offers three membership plans:
Monthly Membership ($30 per month)
12 Month membership ($288/12= $24 a month)
18 Month Membership ($324/18= $18 a month)
The average person who might be relatively new to exercising or is not familiar with modern running watches will not realize that the Whoop Strap 3.0 is a gimmick. Whoop markets their product by using buzzwords and presenting it in a clean, modern aesthetic for the potential customer. They have every right to do that and I am sure they are extremely successful by doing this.
Let’s reexamine those super innovative features that the Whoop Strap 3.0 has:
-ProKnit Band is “Engineered for a high-performance lifestyle. Lined with high-tenacity filaments to absorb sweat and displace pressure for maximum comfort. Includes a rubber grip to prevent slip.” Translation: Just a normal band that you would find on any sort of running watch. Notice how they use terms like “high performance lifestyle” and “high tenacity filaments.” Seriously, WTF is a “high tenacity filament”? I don't know what it is nor do I want to know but I am sure that the average consumer of the product eats stuff like this up. They want the normal gym goer or average runner to think that they are “high performance” Whoop is reinforcing that they are, in fact, an elite or “high performance” athlete if they choose to use their product.
-24/7 Data: Measures your heart rate data while you are wearing the Whoop Strap 3.0. Again, this is nothing revolutionary. Garmin, Coros and Polar are just a few other brands that also have wrist based heart rate monitors and they also present your recovery time/average resting HR among other stats.
5 Day Battery Life: This is pathetic. Most GPS watches with wrist based heart rate monitors have battery lives of up to a month without having to recharge.
I got to admit, as much as I am ripping on their product for just being a normal heart rate monitor and an app that presents your biometrics in a cool and modern fashion, Whoop is doing the right thing if they want to maximize their profits. Normal people eat stuff like this up.
But hey, if you have the money and want to spend it on something you already have, be my guest. You could get the same results if you just got 8-10 hours of sleep every night. It is not that complex and you don't need a $300 product to tell you that.
