Posted it to instagram about 10 minutes ago making what we all saw coming official... thoughts? Strange to see retirement this close to the olympic trials but it was expected. I feel like a lot of high schoolers hearts are crushed, he has clearly done a ton of great things for the sport!

Kyle Merber makes official retirement announcement

Sad but makes sense, he hasn't done much in a while and has seemed to be more into cycling recently anyway
-
Just came to post that. Best wishes to him for the future.
-
People paid him to run?
-
Here is his official statement.
Merber wrote:
Well, I knew I’d have to make this post eventually:
I’m not done running, I’m just done getting paid for it. Sometime in the last couple years I realized that I was no longer getting nervous before races.
At first I thought it was due to health issues or a lack of fitness. But then I found those things and it was only the fire that was missing. 2020 was a blessing in the sense that it gave me time to fully explore those emotions.
I don’t like to say I am retiring — Real runners don’t retire. I’m merely rearranging priorities.
So what’s next? I’m in the process of trying to figure that out myself.
Thank you @njnytc @flynnsports @hokaoneone @feetures @polarglobal @xendurance for the opportunity to live out this dream.

Yes. Groups like NJNYTC helped put Hoka on the map in the serious running world. -
I for one have been a fan of Kyle. He's a great follow on Twitter and was a fun and positive voice for the sport. Good luck w/ your future endeavors KM!

Best Twitter in T&F. Who now takes over the throne? -

I respected him as a runner but I would NEVER agree with his politics. Wish he would focus a little more on running and keep the politics off the feed. -

Translation: I'm in my early 30s with an English degree, no skills, and no experience. I'm in the process of figuring out exactly how f*cked I am. -

lol, yeah right. Like you wouldn't trade places with him in a NY/NJ minute! -

Wouldn't be surprised to see him wind up with a paid D1 assistant position where one of his Columbia/NJNY pals is coaching. -

Lol. This wins the thread. -
Anyone know what a guy like Merber would have been getting paid by Hoka?
-
The real question, did Swarthmore even happen?

Some tributes are pouring in for his rabbiting abilities.

What was his best accomplishment as a runner? If as Monti and Centro imply, it was as a rabbit, then maybe we should hire him at LRC as isn't that wejo's and my claim to fame?
Non pacing aside, what would you say his greatest accomplishment was? In HS, he won Millrose indoors as I remember watching and thinking, "Damn, i"m going ot have to deal with him in the Ivy League for 4 years."
Then he made NCAA final as a sophomore (10th) in 2010 but never made NCAAs again. In 2012, he ran 3:35.59 but didn't make NCAAs that year (correction, he did make NCAAs in 2012 but not the final) or in 2013 when he ran at Texas.
As a pro, it looks like he made two USA finals outdoors. His best showing came in 2015 when he finished 6th behind 5 studs (Cetnro, Andrews, Manzano, Blankenship and Wheatings and then he was 9th in 2016. In 2016, he was one of just 5 guys with the standard so he was more relevant than his finish indicated. -

Kyle just sounds depressed, tbh. He'll be back.
