I read this last night and was disgusted. A 15 year old says a bad word (not even at anyone, nor in a negative or hurtful context) and we’re going to hold it against her forever? Rescind her college acceptance three years after the fact? And hold up her bully as some icon of accountability enforcement?
It’s really insane. And very sad. People, especially children, should be allowed to do a dumb (and almost entirely harmless) thing without such drastic repercussions. Cancel culture and its proponents are revolting.
At a high level society hasn't adjusted to the internet and the ability to both record and share info. If you get recordings of people during their worst 30s, not many people will look good.
And to some extent she just has had some bad luck. If BLM hadn't started in the spring, if UT hadn't had problems recently with black face, white supremist, and the rest, the reaction to this video would have been more muted.
And yeah it will be interesting to see what the repercussions are for the kid who posted the video. Some companies might go that is that the type of person we want to hire but I am guessing most will go this kid is will likely cause problems so why hire him. If you were a prof, would you want to do a research project with him and worry about that you might screw up and he would go nuclear. And the lack of thought about the results of his action also doesn't reflect well.
That high school does sound like a cesspool though...
